The IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is a standardized English language test that assesses your English language skills in four areas: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. The test is designed to measure your ability to communicate effectively in English for academic or professional purposes.

The IELTS test is available in two formats: Academic and General Training. The Speaking and Listening sections are the same for both formats, but the Reading and Writing sections are different.

International English Language Testing System

1. Listening:

  • Duration: Approximately 30 minutes (plus 10 minutes’ transfer time for the paper-based test)
  • Format: 40 questions

2. Reading:

  • Duration: 60 minutes
  • Format: 3 passages

3. Writing:

  • Duration: 60 minutes
  • Format: 2 tasks

4. Speaking:

  • Duration: 11-14 minutes
  • Format: 3 parts

Listening

Audio recordings of various accents and topics, including conversations, lectures, and monologues

Reading

Academic or general training texts on a variety of topics 

Writing

Tests vocabulary, reading comprehension, and critical thinking.

  • Task 1:
    • Academic: Graph or chart description (150 words)
    • General Training: Letter or email (150 words)
  • Task 2: Essay on a given topic (250 words)

Speaking

  • Part 1: Personal questions about yourself and your experiences (4-5 minutes)
  • Part 2: Monologue on a given topic (3-4 minutes)
  • Part 3: Discussion of the topic from Part 2 (4-5 minutes)
